Home Ownership Matters

November 2012

Last week, I was acknowledged by my peers at the National Association of Realtors® Annual Convention in Orlando, Florida as a Home Ownership Matters Hero.  Five Realtors® were selected to be honored by the national association.  This recognition and honor was not something I wanted, applied for or even knew existed until about three months ago.  My work is important to me but…it’s my vocation and I didn’t think much more about it until an email arrived telling me that the committee had chosen me as one of the five.

Someone asked me how were you selected?  My answer is simple, if I knew how to answer that question, I could duplicate it over and over, but I don’t know the answer.  The association executive for the Middle Tennessee Association of Realtors, Candy Joyce CAE, RCE, submitted my name to the committee.  At the time, I was somewhat aggravated because I just wanted to keep on working with my clients.  Now, I’m thankful to Candy for her continued support and for opening additional doors that will allow my work to help many others.

Our association does many great things for Homeowners both on a local and national level.  Watching the videos made me realize how proud I am to be a Realtor®.  Over the past two months, I fretted over the whole thing because I wanted to keep somethings semi private.  Telling the entire world about my personal issues wasn’t something I had considered.

Everyone that knew of the award and recognition was very supportive.  There are times I want to be a leader and others where I’d prefer to sit in the back of the bus.  After the 59 1/2 minutes program was over, I was able to relax and enjoy the convention.  It is nice to be honored for the work you love to do.  Currently, I feel like both a driver and passenger…and that’s ok with me.

Our organization has so many moving parts.  The Home Ownership Matters’ campaign is mainly seen via TV commercials.  You know which one I’m talking about.  The one with the grandfather talking with his grandson.  The one where the grandson says he hopes to have a house like this someday.  There is a new one playing now but most remember the grandfather one from a few months ago.

I’m honored to have been chosen to be one of the five honored at the convention…but I still don’t know what is different about my work, so I’ll keep doing what I do…helping others regardless of what caused their situation.  I’ve said many time before and will again…I work with many great Realtors® that never get the public recognition they have earned.  They know who they are…but anyway it’s my hope that they too will be recognized with a honor.

Here is a link to Realtors.org which tells about all five Realtors® who were selected.
